The Last Pure ICE M5

The F90 M5 is the last purely internal combustion M5 before BMW moved to the G90 PHEV platform. The S63 4.4L twin-turbo V8 with M xDrive all-wheel drive and a 617 hp output made it the most powerful M5 since the F10 M5. The Competition package adds 30 hp for 627 hp total, along with stiffer suspension and M Sport exhaust.

For brake upgrades, the F90 uses the Brembo gold 6-piston system shared with the F-series M3, M4, and M6 — making our complete gold brake system a direct fitment. The S63's 617 hp output puts real demand on braking systems, particularly in track use. A fresh set of OEM Brembo gold calipers with new rotors is the correct maintenance and upgrade path for high-mileage or track-driven F90s.

F90 vs G90: Should You Upgrade?

The G90 M5 is a 717 hp plug-in hybrid — dramatically more power, but significantly more weight (2,510 kg vs the F90's 1,870 kg). For driving feel and mechanical purity, many M5 enthusiasts prefer the F90. Investing in OEM-quality brake and exhaust upgrades for an F90 makes economic sense — the platform is well understood, parts are available, and the S63 engine is capable of high-mileage reliability with proper maintenance.
